Die Deutsche Telekom will das erste Smartphone mit dem neuen Betriebssystem Firefox OS in Europa auf den Markt bringen. Nach BILD.de-Informationen soll das neue Gerät im Sommer für weniger als 100 Euro zu kaufen sein – zunächst in Polen, später auch in anderen Ländern.
Das Mozilla-Smartphone „One Touch Fire“ wird von Alcatel hergestellt. Es soll auf dem Mobile World Congress präsentiert werden, der weltweit wichtigsten Mobilfunkmesse, die am 25. Februar in Barcelona beginnt.
Das One Touch Fire wird von einem Snapdragon-Prozessor (1 GHz) angetrieben und ist als preiswertes Einsteigermodell konzipiert. Spannend wird es durch sein Betriebssystem, das neue Firefox OS.
OS basiert auf Linux
Die neue Betriebssoftware wurde von Mozilla (auch verantwortlich für den Firefox-Browser) entwickelt. Sie basiert, wie auch Android, auf dem PC-Betriebssystem Linux.
Das Besondere: Im Grunde besteht das gesamte Betriebssystem einzig aus einem Browser. Alle Internetseiten, aber auch Anwendungen und Funktionen werden in diesem Browser gestartet. Um das zu ermöglichen, werden alle Apps in der Internet-Programmiersprache HTML5 erstellt.
Offenes System
Anders als bei Android oder iOS gibt es also keine systemspezifischen Apps. Stattdessen können Programme im Grunde von jedem Internet-Server geladen werden. Um die Sicherheit der verfügbaren Anwendungen zu gewährleisten, soll es jedoch einen App-Marktplatz von Mozilla mit zertifizierter Software geben.
Das Ziel der neuen Software ist es, ein offenes Betriebssystem zu schaffen, unabhängig von einem bestimmten Hersteller. Außerdem soll die Vorherrschaft der Betriebssysteme von Apple (iOS) und Google (Android) aufgebrochen werden.
Erfolg steht und fällt mit der Anzahl der Apps
Der Erfolg hängt jedoch vor allem auch von der Zahl der verfügbaren Apps ab. Hier setzt Mozilla auf seine große Entwickler- und Fangemeinde, die auch den Firebox-Internetbrowser seit Jahren mit Add-ons erweitert.
Die Telekom unterstützt die Entwicklung bereits seit dem Projekt-Start im Jahr 2011. Auch Mobilfunkunternehmen wie die spanische Telefonica gehören zu den Mozilla-Partnern.
